Preparing for your med spa treatment isn’t just about showing up on time—it’s about making sure your skin and body are in the best possible condition to maximize results and minimize complications. Whether you’re planning a facial, chemical peel, or injectable treatment like Botox, avoiding a few common missteps can make a significant difference in your outcome.

Here’s what not to do before your appointment:

🚫 Don’t Schedule Treatments in the Wrong Order

Timing matters more than most people realize. A common mistake is planning treatments in the wrong sequence.

  • You can have a facial before botulinum toxins or fillers on the same day, and many patients do.

  • However, you should NOT have a facial after botulinum toxins or fillers on the same day. Massage, pressure, and manipulation of the skin can cause the product to migrate, potentially affecting your results.

When in doubt, always ask your provider to help you plan the ideal treatment timeline.

🚫 Avoid Blood Thinners (If Medically Appropriate)

For injectable treatments, bruising is one of the most common side effects. To reduce your risk:

  • Avoid aspirin, ibuprofen, and other NSAIDs for about 5–7 days prior (unless prescribed by your physician)

  • Skip supplements like fish oil, vitamin E, ginkgo biloba, and garlic

Always consult your healthcare provider before stopping any medications.

🚫 Don’t Drink Alcohol Before Your Appointment

Alcohol can increase your risk of bruising and swelling.

  • Avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours before injectables or more invasive treatments

🚫 Skip Harsh Skincare Products

Your skin should be calm and intact before treatment.

Avoid for 3–5 days prior:

  • Retinoids (Retin-A, tretinoin)

  • Exfoliating acids (glycolic, salicylic, lactic)

  • Scrubs or aggressive exfoliation

Over-irritated skin can lead to increased sensitivity, uneven results, or even complications.

🚫 Don’t Wax or Dermaplane Right Before Certain Treatments

Hair removal methods like waxing or dermaplaning can leave your skin more sensitive.

  • Avoid these for several days before chemical peels, laser treatments, or microneedling

  • If you're unsure, your provider can guide you on proper timing

🚫 Avoid Excess Sun Exposure

Sunburned or recently tanned skin is more prone to complications.

  • Stay out of direct sun and avoid tanning beds for at least a week prior

  • Always wear SPF daily

Treating compromised skin can increase the risk of pigmentation issues and irritation.

🚫 Don’t Come in Sick or Inflamed

If you have an active infection, cold sore, rash, or acne flare in the treatment area:

  • Reschedule your appointment

  • Treatments on compromised skin can worsen the condition or delay healing

🚫 Don’t Hide Medical Information

Your provider needs a full and honest medical history to treat you safely.

Be sure to disclose:

  • Medications

  • Recent procedures

  • Allergies

  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding status

This isn’t about judgment—it’s about safety and optimal outcomes.
