Abdominoplasty, also known as tummy tuck is performed in the outpatient surgery center under general anesthesia.
Patients are seen for an initial consultation to discuss their concerns and goals regarding abdominoplasty. This appointment generally takes about an hour. When a decision has been made to move forward with surgery, patients are seen for a second consultation to discuss preoperative forms and complete paperwork for the surgery center. Prepayment of surgical fees is required 7 to 10 days in advance.
The surgery takes 3-4 hours and the excess fat and skin in the abdomen is removed surgically. Often, drains are placed to prevent a fluid collection and they are removed post operatively. Patients are placed in a surgical binder to prevent swelling and support the abdomen while healing.
After surgery, patients are usually seen the following day then at one and two week intervals for suture removal and to evaluate healing. Patients are then seen at regular intervals to evaluate overall progress and to assess healing.
